Youth Alcohol & Drug Prevention Program

The health and well-being of teenagers is threatened greatly by the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. According to a survey of high school students conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 10% of teens smoke cigarettes (more than 20 days a month); about 75% of high school students have tried alcohol; 28% of teens have had a recent episode of heavy drinking (more than five drinks within a couple of hours); approximately 40% have tried marijuana one or more times and 22% currently use it; and, 9% of teens have tried cocaine and 4% currently use it, according to the survey.

In 2005, Amanda Mason initiated from the ground up a teen alcohol and drug awareness program that today is comprehensive and highly effective on a national scale. Her program is called “Spread Your Wings” and combines information from the Partnership for a Drug Free America, the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Amanda’s own music. Amanda Mason is a highly accomplished singer and current student (Classical Voice) at the Manhattan School of Music.

Amanda’s “Spread Your Wings” program includes a 20-minute message video for teen viewing in classrooms, group settings and assemblies. She also will make live appearances at middle and high schools across the country in conjunction with her recently released pop CD on a special tour called “Euphoria, State of Mind Tour.” Her compelling message in the live performances is that “we all can experience a great exciting and fun feeling through life, without the use of alcohol and drugs.” She was a special guest at Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s annual drug summit and a guest speaker at the premier opening of the movie Chum Scrubbers. In addition to her work on teen alcohol and drug abuse, she chaired the Making Reading a Reality Program sponsored by the National Order of Women Legislators, and served as the teen chair for the Tampa Bay Heart Walk (through which her team raised more than $10,000).

Amanda Mason’s “Spread Your Wings” program is a fresh approach to reaching teens with a strong message against alcohol and drug use. Many teens have been touched deeply by Amanda’s compelling message and she remains an important role model and spokesperson on this highly important issue. Among her career and life goals is to further expand her alcohol and drug awareness program to make a life-changing difference with as many teens and young adults as possible. She is strongly focused and committed to pursue this important calling in the months, years and decades ahead. And, knowing Amanda Mason’s past record of achievement, no doubt exists that she will succeed.
